Sen Durbin Voices Card-Company Concerns With Antitrust Officials [#SwipeFees]


WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- A senior Democratic senator Wednesday told leading U.S. antitrust officials that he has serious concerns about the business practices of card companies Visa Inc. (V) and MasterCard Inc. (MA).

Sen. Richard Durbin (D., Ill.), speaking to officials from the Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission during an antitrust oversight hearing, said he was troubled that Visa and MasterCard can prohibit merchants from offering to consumers certain types of discounts, including ones for using another method of payment.
